James O’Keefe and his team of undercover journalists went undercover at CattleCon 2026 in Nashville, Tennessee, where ranchers and industry insiders exposed how Tyson, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef, the “Big Four” dominate the U.S. beef market. The hidden-camera footage reveals an industry so consolidated that there’s barely any real competition. Prices are manipulated, small producers are squeezed out, and foreign influences are potentially driving up costs for American consumers.
This investigation uncovered how the “Big Four” control roughly 80% of beef processing, a stranglehold built through decades of mergers that eliminated dozens of smaller players. Ranchers described a system where the “Big Four” dictate terms, leaving little room for negotiation.
“They [Big Four] are buying like all the companies in the United States… so they don’t have competition.”
“They [Big Four] can knock you out of this industry in two seconds.”
“They [Big Four] closed all the markets — all the markets are theirs in Brazil and now in the U.S.”
In November 2025, President Trump tweeted that falling cattle prices amid rising boxed beef costs smelled “fishy,” urging the Department of Justice to investigate potential price fixing. With federal scrutiny intensifying, the OMG team went undercover at the industry’s premier event, posing as attendees to capture candid admissions from those inside the supply chain.
Our undercover journalists navigated the convention floor with hidden cameras where the beef industry insiders were located. The OMG team engaged with ranchers, consultants, and vendors directly. One insider admitted the reality: “They say they don’t talk to each other but what they say and what’s true are two different things.”
This investigation follows earlier reports of market manipulation, including antitrust lawsuits filed against the major meatpackers. JBS, the Brazilian company repeatedly accused of coordinating with competitors, has paid more than $160 million to settle claims, while denying any wrongdoing, even as McDonald’s joined lawsuits alleging a long-running supply conspiracy.
The team captured how disruptions at the “Big Four” processing plants can send shockwaves through an entire industry. Ranchers also spoke about losing leverage in a market dominated by a handful of companies. “There’s basically four companies and they pretty much control the market,” said Kevin Bennett of SanRock Ranch. Scott Krusemark of JDR Farms added, “You know the Batista family is pretty much the Brazilian Mafia.”
These findings raise questions about who truly sets beef prices in America, as retail costs climb while many producers report shrinking margins, raising concerns about industry consolidation and a need for greater transparency.
